Vienna Biocenter Summer School Scholarships: Detailed Guide

Vienna Biocenter Summer School Scholarships cover participants’ accommodation, living expenses, medical insurance, travel allowance, and other benefits. The scholarship is fully funded for a period of 9 weeks – June to August – during which the beneficiaries will have access to research facilities and an opportunity to work side by side with leading researchers. The scholarships are available to undergraduates and master students, and students who have completed at least two years of university study in a Life Sciences related field. There is no application fee required for the scholarships. 

Who Sponsors Vienna Biocenter Summer School Scholarships?

The Max Birnstiel Foundation is the sole sponsor of the VBC Scholarships. The foundation was set up by Max Birnstiel who was a pioneer of molecular biology and widely celebrated for his contributions to modern Biology. His vision was to encourage young students to succeed in the field of research. As a result,  the VBC Summer School was a viable ground for the fulfillment of this vision. 

Although Max Birnstiel passed away in 2014, his legacy lives on as many young scientists benefit from the VBC scholarships. 

About Vienna Biocenter Summer School

Vienna Biocenter Summer School is now more than 10 years old. The VBC Summer School consists of nine weeks of practical laboratory work where the scholar will carry out experiments, analyze data and generate ideas as well as discuss the results of this research in lab meetings. The program is organized by Vienna Biocenter for undergraduates and graduates, to gain practical knowledge of science while participating in journal clubs.

Vienna Biocenter is a collaboration between leading research institutes in Europe – the Research Center for Molecular Medicine (CEMM), Gregor Mendel Institute (GMI), Institute of Molecular Biotechnology (IMBA), Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) and the Max Perutz Labs (Max Perutz Labs). VBC is situated in Vienna, Austria.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates for the Vienna Biocenter Summer School Scholarships can be of any nationality and must fulfill the following criteria:

  1. The candidates must either have BA Hons, be Master’s students, or have completed at least two years of university.
  2. The candidates must be studying Life Sciences.
  3. Must have an excellent academic record.
  4. Must be proficient in English.
  5. The students must have three months of research experience

What is the duration of the Vienna Biocenter Summer School Scholarship?

The summer school lasts for nine weeks – from the end of June to the end of August. Therefore the scholarship is valid for nine weeks.

When should I apply for a Vienna Biocenter Summer School Scholarship?

Tentatively, a call for applications opens on the 1st of December and closes on the 31st of January of the next year. Results are published after six weeks, in the middle of March, and Summer School starts at the end of June.
