The University of Waikato is an innovative, research-led university that offers a range of scholarships to help students reach their academic goals. Scholarships provide financial assistance for tuition fees and/or living expenses, enabling students to focus on their studies and gain the skills they need for the future.

So what kind of scholarships are available? The University has over 70 scholarship options available at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels across a range of disciplines. Scholarships are open to both domestic and international students who meet the criteria for each specific award. Some awards are based on student performance or financial need, while others may be merit-based or designed to attract new talent from within New Zealand or overseas. Additionally, there are a number of external organisations offering tertiary education scholarships that can be accessed through the University’s website. 

New Zealand University of Waikato Vice Chancellor’s International Excellence Scholarships 2023 is open for international students. The scholarship allows students to enrol in Undergraduate, Postgraduate level programs at Waikato University. The application deadline for the scholarship is Open.

The Waikato Business School welcomes applications for the International Excellence Scholarship from international students who are new to studying at Waikato, and who is currently in New Zealand or will be coming to study here for face-to-face study in the year 2022 or 2023. 

Students who study online with the University are not eligible to apply for the International Excellence Scholarship, with the exception of students who choose to study at the Waikato China Learning Centre (CLC) at Hainan University.

Scholarship Benefits

The University of Waikato offers Academic Excellence Scholarships, Maori & Pacific Island Achievement Awards as well as various other prestigious scholarships. These range from general undergraduate, postgraduate or doctoral funding to specific opportunities for excellence in research, teaching and service. All eligible applicants are encouraged to apply for the relevant scholarship that best suits their studies or career aspirations.
The value of each scholarship is determined by the number and type granted each year, but generally includes full tuition fees, living costs, books and other incidentals. The awards also provide recipients with an opportunity to network with peers and mentors from different backgrounds which helps them become more successful in their chosen fields.

The scholarship awards is worth up to NZD$15,000 towards tuition fees.

Eligibility Criteria

This Scholarship is intended to support talented international students who are enrolling for the first time in undergraduate or postgraduate programmes at the University of Waikato. The Scholarships have a value of up to NZD$15,000 and will be awarded to successful applicants who demonstrate excellent academic achievement.

Application Procedure

Applications for the Scholarship can be submitted at any time and decisions will normally be made within 8 to 12 weeks of the time of application

Applicants must upload all of the following as part of their online application:

  • Their conditional or unconditional offer of place from the University of Waikato
  • A personal statement that sets out the following (on the template):

a) In 100 words or less tell us why you want to study at the University of Waikato. 

b) In 100 words or less tell us how you will be a global ambassador for the University of Waikato.
