Tunghai University Scholarships: Funding & Eligibility

Tunghai University was heavily involved in international cultural and academic exchanges. Tunghai has sister schools on all five continents. For example, Tunghai has sister schools in 23 countries, such as the United States, Australia, Germany, France, England, Spain, Italy, Czech Republic, Japan, Korea, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, and gazelle.

The Office of International Education and Programs (OIEP) was created to promote the internationalization of higher education. To accommodate the increasing need, the OIEP expanded and spread out the international cooperation and student affairs sections. With the new rollout, the OIEP now handles cooperation with foreign schools and provides academic advising and other services.

Every year, Tunghai attracts exchange and international students from the United States, Japan, Korea, Australia, Hong Kong, Mainland China and Europe. With the community of international and foreign students on campus, Tunghai students reap the benefit of sharing cultural experiences and learning about the differences between cultures. As such, Tunghai students have an opportunity to enhance their proficiency in Chinese.

Scholarship Benefits

The duration of the scholarship is listed below, which, except in special circumstances, shall be passed by the Scholarship Committee and approved by the University President.
1. Up to four years for undergraduate students (up to five years for students of the Department of Architecture).
2. Up to two years for students of masters and PhD programs.

The awarded amount of the scholarship and the awarding principle is as follows:
1. The amount and the number of scholarships awarded shall be determined based on the school’s grants budget for the current academic year and the total number of international students enrolled. The awards are as follows: (1) Type I: NT$100,000 for one academic year. (2) Type II: NT$60,000 for one academic year. (3) Type III: NT$20,000 for one academic year.
2. New or economically disadvantaged students have priority for the scholarship.
3. Scholarship applications are approved by the Scholarship Committee once every academic year, and an annual application is required.
4. The amount of the approved scholarship will be divided into two semesters and granted to the recipients after their completion of school registration, and be used to offset their registration fees directly.
5. The awarded students need to provide service-learning time for 10 hours per semester in principle.

Eligibility Criteria

The applicant’s qualifications for applying for a scholarship are as follows:

  • A new international student.
    A currently enrolled international student who meets one of the following criteria:

(1)  A currently enrolled undergraduate freshman: The applicant has completed one semester of study with a formal academic record, the academic performance of the previous semester has a grade point average of 75 or above, or the class rank is in the top 25%, the labour performance achievement point is above 70, and there is no significant violation of rules or regulations.

(2)  A currently enrolled undergraduate sophomore or above: The applicant has completed one semester of study with a formal academic record, the academic performance of the previous two semesters has a grade point average of 75 or above, or the class rank is in the top 25%, the labour performance achievement point is above 70, and there is no significant violation of rules or regulations.

(3) A first-year graduate student: The applicant has completed one semester of study with a formal academic record, the academic performance of the previous semester has a grade point average of 80, and there is no significant violation of rules or regulations.

(4) A second-year graduate student or above: The applicant has completed one academic year of study with a formal academic record, the academic performance of the previous two semesters has a grade point average of 80, and there is no significant violation of rules or regulations.

(5) A PhD student writing a dissertation may apply for the scholarship with a letter of recommendation from the advisor and a dissertation writing plan. The dissertation writing plan should include the 2 motives/purposes of the research, research framework and design, data collection methods and sources, dissertation outline, writing plan, and timeline. A recipient of the Taiwan Government Scholarship or the Excellent Freshman Enrollment Award is not eligible for this scholarship.

Application Procedure

Tunghai University offers a number of scholarships for international students who wish to study at the university. The application procedure for these scholarships is as follows:

1. International students should first apply to Tunghai University through the online application system.

2. After submitting the online application, students will need to send their official transcripts and other required documents to the university.

3. Once the university has received all of the required documents, they will review the applications and award scholarships to eligible students.

4. Scholarships will be awarded based on academic merit and financial need.

5. Students who are awarded a scholarship will be notified by email or letter from the university.
