Sawiris Foundation for Social Development Graduate Scholarships: Guide

There are three categories of The Sawiris Foundation for Social Development Scholarships; Undergraduate Studies Scholarship Program, Graduate Scholarship Program, and TVET Scholarship. Each of these categories has different classes of scholarships.

So, no matter your study level, whether you are an undergraduate student, or doing a graduate program, the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development Scholarships have you covered. 

While some of the scholarships are fully sponsored, others are just partially so. We will be diving into the details of the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development Graduate Scholarships; and how you can apply for it successfully.

About The Sawiris Foundation for Social Development Scholarships

One of the first national donor foundations in Egypt, the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development (SFSD) was founded in 2001 with a donation from the Sawiris Family. 

Since its founding, SFSD has concentrated on solving the most urgent problems that the most disadvantaged Egyptians face, such as poverty, unemployment, and the lack of access to excellent healthcare, and education. 

In cooperation with the public and private sectors, as well as civil society, the SFSD has been successful in funding and delivering initiatives aimed at achieving comprehensive and sustainable development during the past 18 years.

Types of Sawiris Foundation for Social Development Graduate Scholarships

1. The Technische Universitat Berlin Campus El Gouna (TUBCG) Scholarship Program

Since 2012, only Technische Universität Berlin has run a campus in Egypt entirely in accordance with the standards set by the Federal Republic of Germany. The TUBCG Scholarship Program offers full tuition assistance.

2. The Yousriya Loza-Sawiris Scholarship 2022-2023

For the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development, Newton Education Services manages the scholarship. The funding period may last up to two years.

3. SFSD – DAAD Scholarship Program

Outstanding graduates from the four German schools in Egypt—DEO, DSB Cairo, DSB Alexandria, and ES in New Cairo—are awarded two scholarships each year by the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development (SFSD) in collaboration with its administrative partner, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), to continue their education and obtain bachelor’s and master’s degrees from one of Germany’s top universities in any field of study (other than medicine). The period of funding is up to five years.

4. Sawiris Arts & Culture Scholarship (SACS)

The Sawiris Arts and Culture Scholarship program seeks out exceptionally driven, gifted, and socially conscious candidates who understand the value of art in a thriving and evolving community. 

The period of funding is four years for bachelor’s degree programs, two years for master’s degree programs, a minimum of six months, and a maximum of two years for residency/apprenticeships.

5. The Onsi Sawiris Scholarship Program (OSSP) – Graduate

Through the Onsi Sawiris Scholarship Program, Orascom Construction offers Egyptian students fully financed scholarships so they can enroll in master’s degree programs at prominent American universities in subjects that will advance Egypt’s economic development.

  • Accommodations (student housing is required unless it is not provided).
  • a living stipend (depending on the government and university reference).
  • Airfare.
  • Transportation.
  • (Depending on government and academic references) Health insurance

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility Criteria for Technische Universitat Berlin Campus El Gouna (TUBCG) Scholarship Program

  • To reside in Egypt as an Egyptian national (preference will not be given to dual nationality holders).
  • Have a bachelor’s in engineering or a closely related subject. 
  • Satisfy the entry criteria for the master’s degree programs at TUBCG.
  • English proficiency is necessary. valid exam results for the TOEFL IBT or IELTS, with a minimum grade of 87 for the TOEFL IBT and 6.0 for the IELTS
  • Master’s program completion in two academic years 
  • The scholarships are given out based on financial need, academic achievement, extracurricular involvement, and social behavior, as well as merit and character.
  • After graduating, work in Egypt for a minimum of two years straight.

Eligibility criteria for Yousriya Loza-Sawiris Scholarship

  • A resident of Egypt who is Egyptian (preference will not be given to dual nationality holders).
  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree, or its equivalent, in a comparable area of study from a reputable academic institution.
  • At least two years of work experience in the development industry should be demonstrated.
  • Satisfy the criteria for enrollment in the academic.
  • Establish a strong academic and professional background.
  • Scholarship decisions are based on a student’s financial needs, academic ability, extracurricular activity, and moral integrity.
  • Though no particular academic path is required, Humphrey School of Public Affairs students will do best if they have a solid liberal arts education and excellent mathematical and analytical ability.
  • You should have prior math, statistics, and economics coursework.
  • English proficiency is necessary. Exam dates for the TOEFL or IELTS must fall within two years of the beginning of the graduate program. The minimal prerequisites are either 7 or 100 (TOEFL internet-based, with a minimum score of 22 on each component) (IELTS, minimum 7 on each section).
  • Commitment to spend at least two (2) years straight working in Egypt’s development sector after graduating from the YLSS program.
  • Applicants are required to submit income documentation.

Required Documents 

  • Application form, complete with the personal statement.
  • A copy of a current passport’s ID page.

  • Transcripts from every level—undergraduate and graduate (if appropriate).
  • valid TOEFL/IELTS score.
  • Two recommendation letters.
  • One private image.
  • HR letter from the present employer, together with the pay stub or, in the event of redundancy, a financial statement.

Eligibility Criteria for SFSD – DAAD Scholarship Program

  • To reside in Egypt as an Egyptian national (preference will not be given to dual nationality holders)
  • Received the best GPA and an ABITUR award, proving academic distinction (Average grade must be 1.5 or higher)
  • Be a recent alumnus of one of the German-language schools in Egypt, DEO, DSB Alexandria, DSB Cairo, or ES in New Cairo.
  • The scholarships are given out based on financial need, academic achievement, extracurricular involvement, and social behavior, as well as merit and character.
  • Except for medicine, all fields of study are eligible for scholarships.
  • Fulfill the entrance requirements for the relevant university.
  • The scholarship’s maximum term is often five academic years.
  • After graduating, spend three years in Egypt.

Eligibility Criteria for Sawiris Arts & Culture Scholarship (SACS)

  • An unconditional acceptance for a bachelor’s or master’s degree at one of the recognized universities in your chosen subject.
  • To reside in Egypt as an Egyptian national (preference will not be given to dual nationality holders).
  • Engaged in the community and on a social level.
  • Have not spent more than three years living abroad.
  • Be dedicated to returning to Egypt for 2 to 3 years after successfully completing their residency or degree.
  • For music students, conditional acceptance for a bachelor’s or master’s degree at one of the recognized universities.
  • Students studying music should have a level 5 from either the Royal Schools of Music or Trinity College London. Both are offered in Egypt.
  • To possess professional artistic training and relevant job experience. (Our panel of specialists will assess applications for residencies and apprenticeships.)

Eligibility Criteria for Onsi Sawiris Scholarship Program (OSSP)

Graduate applicants must fulfill the following basic requirements in order to be eligible for the Onsi Sawiris Scholarship Program:

  • Being Egyptian citizens who live in Egypt (preference will not be given to dual nationality applicants).
  • 3.5 or above on the GPA scale for your undergraduate degree (Cumulative grade).
  • A TOEFL iBT® as evidence of English language proficiency 100 is the minimum necessary score (taken within 2 years).
  • Applicants for the Master of Business Administration program must have a GMAT score of 650 or above (taken within 5 years).
  • Applicants for the Master of Engineering program must have a minimum overall GRE score of 315. (Analytical Writing: 4.5).
  • Additional Activities: have participated in extracurricular activities in the past or now.
  • Candidates who are just applying for the Master of Business Administration (MBA) must have a minimum of three years of professional experience.
  • Be prepared to begin your studies in the United States in 2024.
  • Those applying who have never lived outside of Egypt are given preference.
  • Be determined to return to Egypt for a period of two years after.

Fees & Funding

What criteria are used to choose students for the scholarships?

Scholars are chosen based on their demonstrated academic ability, extracurricular involvement, and moral character, as well as their financial need.

What proficiency in English is needed?

Either the IELTS or TOEFL exam results must be shown. Following is the minimum necessary score:

Score in total: 100 (Each segment has 22)

IELTS

Score overall: 7.0 ( 7 on each section)

Application Procedure

How to apply for Technische Universitat Berlin Campus El Gouna (TUBCG) Scholarship Program

Students that meet the requirements submit their applications directly through the TUBCG application process. 

To be eligible for the SFSD- TUB Scholarship Program, applicants must submit their application by February 28th. 

The application may be found on the TUBCG official website. 

Required Documents

Your application must be accompanied by the following paperwork: 

  • a copy of your passport, 
  • a resume, 
  • your final academic transcript, 
  • a two-page maximum motivational letter, 
  • any documentation of your work experience, 
  • income, and involvement in the community. 

Note: The Sawiris Foundation for Social Development and TUBCG only interview shortlisted candidates in person.

How to Apply for SFSD – DAAD Scholarship Program

Students who are interested in the program and meet the requirements can apply by completing a pre-selection application and submitting it to DAAD. Each year in December, the online application gateway for the scholarship is made accessible. The relevant German school’s responsible party disseminates additional information.

Students who meet all requirements are invited to an interview at the DAAD-Cairo office. The applications and interview reports are then transmitted to the DAAD-Bonn office for the final decision.

How to apply for Sawiris Arts & Culture Scholarship (SACS)

Receive your letter of acceptance and anticipated program tuition costs from one of the pre-approved colleges in one of the aforementioned fields or in a renowned residency/apprenticeship program.

Submit the SFSD application along with the necessary paperwork:

  • The link for the scholarship application form will be accessible beginning on February 15, 2023.
  • You must include a portfolio of your work.
  • Candidates in the performing arts must submit at least five solo performances.
  • Applications from music students must include at least five solo performances in various genres.

Interviews with selected applicants

Candidates that make the shortlist will be required to participate in interviews with our expert panel.

  • For applicants to the performing, visual, and cinema studies fields, proof of unconditional admission.
  • Conditional acceptance for musicians.
  • Comprehensive portfolio of artistic and cultural work
  • Solo performances for candidates in the performing arts.
  • A copy of a current passport’s ID page.
  • One current image of the subject against a white background.
  • High school diploma.
  • All undergraduate certifications and transcripts are required if you’re seeking a master’s degree.
  • If you’re applying for a master’s degree, you’ll need two references; if you’re applying for a bachelor’s, you’ll need one.
  • Evidence of employment, if necessary.
