City University of Hong Kong Scholarships: Application Guide

Every year, the City University of Hong Kong selects candidates for scholarships based on their extraordinary academic performances. Each qualifying student enrolled in undergraduate or research programs has access to up to $38,500.

Who sponsors City University of Hong Kong Scholarships? 

The City University of Hong Kong sponsors the City University of Hong Kong Scholarships. It makes the grant available to eligible students through the University Grants Committee.

In 1984, the City Polytechnic of Hong Kong became the City University of Hong Kong. It attained full accreditation ten years later. The City University of Hong Kong, situated in the center of Hong Kong, is known for being a cutting-edge center for professional education and research, as well as for tackling global concerns and fostering constructive change. The college has nine primary faculties that provide classes on various topics. It also has two residential halls, athletic teams, student groups, and other facilities that promote learning.

The City University of Hong Kong Scholarships for domestic and international students include;

1. Entrance Scholarships

  • Worth of Scholarship: up to $23,500
  • Duration of Scholarship: Duration of the course

  • Eligible Courses: All Courses 

The City University of Hong Kong provides around four entrance scholarships to domestic and international students. Three of the entry scholarships are for undergraduate study, and application for admission automatically qualifies applicants for one of them. The fourth scholarship is specifically for student-athletes of the university.

The selection procedure does not require a different application. Additionally, individuals are chosen based on their prior academic success.

The City of Hong Kong University Entrance Scholarships includes;

  1. Top Scholarship. Offers $23,500. The scholarship covers annual tuition fees, on-campus accommodation, and living expenses.
  2. Full Tuition Scholarship. Offers an $18,500 scholarship that covers annual tuition fees.
  3. Half Tuition Scholarship. A scholarship of $9,250 is available to cover half of the annual tuition fee.

Recipients must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or above each year during their year of study to extend the entrance scholarships.

2. President’s Scholarship 

  • Worth of Scholarship: up to $38,300 per annum
  • Duration of Scholarship: Normal duration of the registered undergraduate program (4 to 5 years)
  • Number of Available Scholarships: Unknown
  • Eligible Courses: Bachelor’s degree at the College of Engineering, the College of Science, and the Department of Biomedical Sciences. 

High-scoring domestic JUPAS applicants are eligible to apply for the President’s Scholarship. The scholarship is available for any undergraduate course offered by the College of Engineering, the College of Science, and the Department of Biomedical Sciences.

3. Postgraduate Studentship

  • Worth of Scholarship: up to $2,240 per month
  • Duration of Scholarship: Normal duration of the registered postgraduate program
  • Number of Available Scholarships: Unknown
  • Eligible Courses: All postgraduate courses offered by the institution

All full-time students who wish to enroll in a research degree program at the City University of Hong Kong are eligible for the postgraduate studentship scholarship. The postgraduate scholarship is renewable only if the student performs highly in their academic and research performance.  

4. Hong Kong Tech Scholarships

  • Worth of Scholarship: up to $$25,500 per annum
  • Duration of Scholarship: Normal duration of the registered program
  • Number of Available Scholarships: Unknown
  • Eligible Courses: Tech-related courses offered by the institution

The City of Hong Kong University awards Hong Kong Tech Scholarships to students enrolled in tech-related courses.  In addition to academic achievements, the selection committee looks at the applicant’s qualifications and qualities such as; intelligence, leadership, character, aspiration and enthusiasm, and language competence.

5. Outstanding Athletes Scholarships

  • Worth of Scholarship: Full + $20,500 per annum
  • Duration of Scholarship: Expected duration of the registered program
  • Number of Available Scholarships: Unknown
  • Eligible Courses: Student-athletes

All student-athletes in their first year of undergraduate study at City of Hong Kong University are eligible for the Outstanding Athletes Scholarships. Although this prize also qualifies as an entry scholarship, it is only available to exceptional athletes who choose to attend a regular study program.

Eligibility Criteria

To receive financial aid from the City University of Hong Kong, the following must be done;

  • The applicant must be a student of the university undertaking undergraduate or graduate studies in the institution.
  • The applicant must have an outstanding academic performance from their previous school.
  • Except for entry scholarships, which do not require a separate application from the admission application, the candidate must apply for the scholarships.

General Requirements 

The City University of Hong Kong Scholarships Committee considers the following two criteria for each scholarship application:

  1. Academic achievements from high school or a previous degree
  2. English language proficiency

Additional qualifications could also be necessary for some study programs. Additionally, candidates who don’t speak Chinese will demonstrate a basic understanding of the language.


Fees & Funding

What is the most efficient way to send my TOEFL results to the City University of Hong Kong?

You should arrange with the ETS (Educational Testing Service) to give the school your TOEFL scores.  In addition, if you submit a photocopy of your TOEFL result, you must present the original official document for verification upon request by the university. 

What happens if the university cancels the program I applied for?

If the university cancels any program, they will refund all fees paid by applicants.

Can I transfer my credits from my former university to the City University of Hong Kong program as a transfer student?

Yes, the possibility of a credit transfer exists if you took similar courses at your prior college. However, transferred credits do not count when determining the grade point average and award category. 

Can I enroll in two programs at the City University of Hong Kong?

No, you cannot. The City University of Hong Kong prohibits enrolment in two academic study programs. You must withdraw from your current study program before enrolling in a new program at the university.

  • After the account creation, the school will send you an application ID
  • Once you receive your application ID, log in to your application to complete the registration
  • Upload the necessary document and submit your application.
  • After you submit the online application, you will need to pay the $38 application fee.

Note: You can make changes to your application. However, this is only before the selection process begins.
