The AGI Education Scholarships are fully funded scholarships to support students studying in the field of geosciences. The scholarship is available for international students that are the next generation of geoscientists. And there are thousands of dollars worth of scholarships given to qualified or eligible students at critical points in their career development. 

Who sponsors AGI Education Scholarships?

The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) proudly sponsors the AGI Education Scholarships. It’s a scholarship awarded to high-potential U.S. citizens or permanent residents undergoing a geoscience degree at an accredited U.S. institution of higher education in a recognized geoscience program. The scholarships are available for bachelor, master’s, and doctoral degrees. 

Overview of AGI Education 

The American Geosciences Institute is a professional association that represents geologists, geophysicists, and fellow earth scientists. It was established in 1948 and aims to provide information services to geoscientists, serves as a voice of shared interests in our profession, and plays a significant role in strengthening geoscience education. The organization offers a variety of scholarships to support students studying in the field of geosciences. It is awarded to students at all levels of education, from undergraduate to graduate and beyond, pursuing careers in geosciences, and proudly provides AGI staff members financial, policy, and program support. AGI Education aims to connect Earth, science, and people by serving as a unifying force for the geoscience community.

English is the official language of Virginia, and the currency is the U.S. Dollar (U.S. $).

List of Scholarships that are offered at the AGI Education 

There are different types of merit-based Scholarships at AGI Education. The prominent ones are:

1. AGI Scholarship for Advancing Diversity in the Geoscience Profession 

AGI Scholarship for diverse people aims to help geoscience students from underrepresented communities link the challenging step of moving from an undergraduate geoscience degree into a full-time graduate program. The AGI Education Scholarship for Black, Indigenous, or People of Color amounts to a $5000 award to support students of high potential through this critical point of their geoscience career. Please note that the students must be within two semesters of completing their bachelor’s degree in geoscience.

2. Harriet Evelyn Wallace Scholarship for Women Geoscience Graduate Students

Interestingly, AGI supports one Master’s and one Doctoral female geoscience graduate student each year. Female applicants studying geosciences at an accredited U.S. institution of higher education in a recognized geoscience program can apply for this scholarship. So, U.S. citizens or permanent residents can apply for this scholarship. The scholarship costs up to $5000 annually for students. It’s important to note that it’s based on academic merit and potential for a robust geoscience career.

A minimum of two students are offered AGI Education Scholarships. 

What Field of Study is eligible for the AGI Education Scholarships?

Scholarships at AGI Education are field-sensitive. Thus, students can apply for a scholarship while being admitted to a field of study such as geology, geophysics, meteorology, and environmental science. Successful candidates will have an undergraduate GPA of 3.25 or higher and a graduate GPA of 3.0 or higher. It all depends on your overall cumulative GPA reported on the high school transcript.

How much are AGI Education Scholarships?

The AGI Education Scholarship is a full scholarship worth approximately $5000 per year. Holders of this scholarship are also eligible for a second scholarship of $5,000.

What is the duration of the scholarship?

The scholarship is available for all students undergoing a geoscience graduate program, and successful applicants will be offered the one academic year scholarship. Please note that not all AGI Education scholarships are renewable, as applicants must review and meet the renewal criteria each year to receive the scholarship for the next academic year.

Is the scholarship fully or partially funded?

The AGI Education Scholarship is a fully funded scholarship available. The scholarship opportunity is available for first-year undergraduate students and graduate students.

Applicable Courses

The AGI Education Scholarships for international students are available for all geoscience courses, such as energy, environmental science, natural resource management, etc. International students that are permanent residents at the undergraduate and graduate schools of the institution are eligible to apply. 

Eligibility Criteria

AGI scholarships are highly competitive, and the selection process is rigorous. Ultimately, you must fulfil the following eligibility criteria to be successful.

  • Applicants should have an undergraduate GPA of 3.25 or higher and a graduate GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Also, it would help to have an official high school transcript and test score when admitted into the university.
  • Additionally, it would help if you were academically talented.
  • Finally, applicants should be ready to show a high probability of completing a geoscience graduate program and transitioning into the profession following graduation. Applicants should be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Requirements for AGI Education Scholarships

The AGI Education Scholarships requirements include the following documents to gain a scholarship at the university:

  • You should input your essential information.
  • List the AGI societies you registered with and your membership identification number.
  • Write a strict 500-word limit abstract about your research interests in graduate school. Why you can finish it and what impact it will have on the geoscience community.
  • Create a strict 500-word limit essay of what you view as your path forward in the geoscience profession beyond graduate school
  • Craft a stern 500-word limit essay on “How to have you or your work advanced diversity, equity, and inclusion in the sciences.”
  • Write a strict 250-word limit description of extracurricular activities and professional development experiences.
  • Present your Curriculum Vitae (not resume), and note that you don’t need explanations of courses or coursework.
  • Present your Undergraduate Academic Transcript(s).

Who is eligible to apply for an AGI Education Scholarship?

Women pursuing master’s or doctoral degrees and black geoscience students are eligible for the scholarship.

Is an AGI Education Scholarship renewable?

You can renew it as long as you remain full-time graduate students in your geoscience degree programs.

How much does an AGI Education Scholarship provide?

AGI Education Scholarship provides $5000. 

Are there any restrictions on how the AGI Education Scholarship is spent?

AGI Education scholarship doesn’t have any restrictions on it.
