About the Academy of Korean Studies Scholarships

The Academy of Korean Studies Scholarships is a range of fully funded scholarships offered to international students who wish to study in any of the universities in Korea. It is created by the government of Korea, for international students who exhibit exceptional academic abilities and financial needs.

Over 1,300 students (undergraduates and graduate students) will participate in these scholarships if they have attained an acceptable level of fluency in the Korean language or will enroll in a Korean language training program at a language institution located within the campus. Students on transfer between universities are not eligible for the scholarship.

There are about 250 scholarships sponsored by the Korean Government, and each is aimed at motivating international students to study in Korea. In addition, the Academy of Korean Studies Scholarships strives to promote foreign relations and to promote the Korean language. The scholarship is for all subjects.

Other Scholarships Sponsored by the Korean Government

There are many categories of sponsorships offered by the Korean Government to international students. Here are some of them:

#1. Global Korea Scholarship

This scholarship is for international students who will undertake 4-year undergraduate courses at designated universities, and graduate students who wish to undertake Masters or Ph.D. courses at any Korean University.

#2. Korean Government Support Program for Foreign Exchange Students

This is for international students who will participate in an exchange program and will study at a Korean university for 4 months (1 semester) or 10 months (2 semesters).

#3. Global Korea Scholarship Invitation Program for International Students (credit courses)

Beneficiaries of this government scholarship will be studying in Korea for 10 months (two semesters) or 4 months (one semester), taking on credit coursework during summer or winter break.

#4. Support Program for Self-financed Students

This is a Korean government initiative to support international students who are financing their own education


Who sponsors the Academy of Korean Studies Scholarships?

The scholarship is sponsored by the government of Korea and is available at all universities in Korea. 


A little bit about Korean Universities

Education is a serious business in Korea, and as a result, Korean universities are quite competitive. The Korean government places top priority on education and invests heavily in it. Part of this investment is in the numerous scholarship programs sponsored by the Korean government. Furthermore, the Korean Government recognizes the advantage of encouraging the exchange of education between Korea and other countries, hence, the Academy of Korean Studies Scholarships.

Korea has three top universities known under the acronym – SKY. They are  Seoul National University, Korea University, and Yonsei University. In all, there are 43 private universities and 179 public universities in Korea, and each university is a recipient of the Academy of Korean Studies Scholarships. 


Scholarship Benefits

How Much are the Academy of Korean Studies Scholarships?

The Academy of Korean Studies Scholarships does not have any specific monetary value because it awards full funding to its recipients. However, a beneficiary of the Academy of Korean Studies Scholarships will be awarded some or all of the following:

  • Living Expenses – 500,000 to 1,000,000 KRW 
  • Tuition Fees – Actual cost or maximum of 5,000,000 KRW per semester
  • Medical Insurance – 20,000 KRW per month
  • Language Courses – 800,000 KRW per quarter
  • Research Support – 210,000 to 240,000 KRW per semester
  • Award for Excellent Korean Language Proficiency – 100,000 KRW
  • Printing Costs for Dissertation – 500,000 to 800,000 KRW 
  • Resettlement Allowance – 200,000 KRW
  • Completion Grant – 100,000 KRW 
  • Air Fare – Actual Cost

How Many Students Receive the Academy of Korean Studies Scholarships?

250 international students benefit from the scholarship, but this number is subject to change in the Korean Government’s budget.

What Field of Study is Eligible for the Academy of Korean Studies Scholarships?

The Academy of Korean Studies Scholarships is awarded to deserving international undergraduate and graduate students in all programs.  


How Much Are The Academy of Korean Studies Scholarships?

The Academy of Korean Studies Scholarships offers full funding, therefore it awards the recipient resettlement allowance, living allowance, and tuition fees, among others. 

How Many Students Receive the Academy of Korean Studies Scholarships?

250 international students receive the Academy of Korean Studies Scholarships per academic year.

Can Undergraduates Apply for the Academy of Korean Studies Scholarships?

Yes, the Academy of Korean Studies Scholarships is for undergraduate and graduate students who are not citizens of Korea.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility Criteria for the Academy of Korean Studies Scholarships

To qualify for the Academy of Korean Studies Scholarship, an applicant must fulfill the following criteria:

1.  Applicant must not be a Korean Citizen

1a. Both applicant and his or her parents must be citizens of the country where they were born

1b.. Must be adequately mentally and physically fit to reside in Korea for a long time

For Undergraduate Applicants

a. An applicant of undergraduate level must be under the age of 25 at the time of entry into a Korean Higher Institution

b. Applicant must have finished high school at the time of arrival in Korea

For Graduate Applicants

a. Applicant must be under the age of 40 at the time of entry into a Korean Higher Institution

b. Applicant must be a recipient of a bachelor’s or master’s degree at the time of arrival in Korea

c. Must have an above 80% Grade Point Average (G.P.A) from the last institution of learning attended

Foreign Exchange Students

a. Participants who earlier benefitted from a 4-month scholarship are not eligible for extension or renewal

b. Must complete at least two semesters in their indigenous universities

c. Must not be sponsored by the Korean Government for any other scholarship

d. Must have dual nationalities. Korean nationality is not acceptable.

e. Must enroll for regular courses, not language courses.

GKS Invitation Program for International Students (credit courses)

In addition to the criteria for foreign exchange students, must not participate in additional scholarships from the Korean Government including Korean Government Support Program for Foreign Exchange Students.

Please Note:

  • You are not eligible for the Academy of Korean Studies Scholarships if you have previously undertaken an undergraduate or graduate program in Korea
  • A former beneficiary of the Korean Global Scholarship Program (KGSP) who has a G.P.A of 90% or above, and has passed level 5 of the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK), can reapply for this program through the embassy or the university.

What type of Scholarships does the Academy of Korea Studies Scholarships offer?

The scholarship offers full funding for international students who fulfill the criteria laid down by the Korean government. To be eligible, you must demonstrate exceptional academic proficiency, and must not be of Korean nationality.

Can I participate in the Academy of Korea Studies Scholarships if I am already a student at a Korean University?

No. The scholarship is for applicants who will undertake a 4-year program or a master’s degree or Ph.D. program at a Korean university. You are not eligible if you are already a student in a Korean university or a second-year student in a foreign university. This is because the scholarship is fully funded, therefore it runs from the beginning to the end of a beneficiary’s academic experience in Korea.

When can I apply for the Academy of Korean Studies Scholarships?

The scholarships are accessed through the Korean embassy or the local university in your country of residence. The academy invites recommendations from indigenous universities through the NIIED, in September of every year. The schools, in turn, carry out their selection process and advise the NIIED by February of the next year. Qualified beneficiaries join the scholarship program afterward, in September. 

What happens if there are not enough international students to benefit from the Academy of Korean Studies Scholarships in a given period?

There is no specific number of international students who must benefit from the scholarship. The Korean government will not reconsider its set standards if there is an insufficient number of international students who qualify for the scholarship. Eligibility criteria are strict and only those who qualify can benefit.  

Application Procedure

How to Apply for the Academy of Korean Studies Scholarships

International students do not, by themselves, apply for the Academy of Korean Studies Scholarships. The National Institute for International Education (NIIED) invites recommendations from foreign universities. 

If interested, applicants should submit documents required for their scholarship application, to the Korean embassy in their country of residence, or the university that has been invited to make recommendations.

If satisfied, the Korean embassy or university concerned will send vetted applicants to the NIIED, along with their required documents. The NIIED will assess the recommended applicants and notify the Korean embassy about the chosen beneficiaries of the scholarships.
